The Centre of Urban History, Culture and Media, CUHK organized its first international conference entitled "Imagining the Future: Community Innovation and Social Resilience in Asia" on 23-25 February 2017. In the context of profound changes and uncertainties brought by globalization to physical, social, and cultural space, the conference provides an interdisciplinary forum on which scholars critically examine and imagine the future city together. Eighty scholars and practitioners from 28 different institutions in 13 different countries or territories across Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Americas attended the 2.5 day conference.
香港中文大學都市歷史、文化與傳媒研究中心於2017年2月23至25日舉辦了第一次國際會議，主題為「想象未來：亞洲社區創新與社會韌性」。全球化為物理、社會及文化空間帶來深遠的變化及不確定性，此次會議作為跨學科論壇，提供了讓學者共同批判研究及想像未來城市的平台。參加了這次兩天半會議的與會學者及從業人員來自28個不同機構，並來自13個不同的亞太、歐洲和美洲國家或地區。
We were honored to have Prof. Wong Siu-lun, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong, as the keynote speaker. Prof. Wong's talk, entitled Chater's Choice: An Indian Armenian in British Hong Kong, examined the life of Sir Catchick Paul Chater and showed how historical sociology helps us to understand the development of a metropolis and how it interplays with personal choices and circumstances.
我們有幸請來香港大學社會學系名譽教授黃紹倫主講，黃教授的演講題為「遮打的選擇：英殖民香港的一位印度亞美尼亞人」，探究了吉席·保羅·遮打爵士的人生，並展示歷史社會學如何有助我們理解都市發展、及其與個人選擇及境況的相互作用。
Papers were presented in 18 panels, covering various aspects of the built environment, cultural practices, and social groupings of Asian cities. For example, the "Visions from the Margins of Hong Kong" panel examined how domestic workers and refugees use different art forms to generate dialogues about multiculturalism in the city. The "Religion and Rituals in the Intercultural City" panel compared the changing religious landscapes in Hong Kong, Singapore, Hsin-Chu, and Shanghai under globalization and secularization. The "Negotiating Play and Leisure in Urban Society" panel discussed the connection between sports and public space using cases studies from Brazil, China, Hong Kong, and India. A publication is being planned to make the full research papers available to a wider audience.
會議文獻得以在18個座談會中進行演講，議題覆蓋包括亞洲城市的建築環境、文化習俗和社會群體的方方面面。例如，「香港邊緣社會的視角」座談會探討了家庭傭工和難民如何利用不同的藝術形式，在城市中開啟多元文化主義的對話。「跨文化城市的宗教及儀式」座談會比較了在全球化和世俗化背景下，香港、新加坡、台灣新竹和上海不斷變幻的宗教景象。「都市社會休閒娛樂的交涉」座談會引用了巴西、中國、香港和印度的案例，討論運動和公共空間的聯繫。研究文獻全文將會被結集出版，以讓更多人了解其內容。
Parallel events included an exhibition on social resilience of marginal groups in Hong Kong, including migrant domestic workers, South Asians, and ex-offenders. In the fieldtrip to Wanchai, participants saw how the local community revitalized their neighborhood under urban renewal policies. The documentary "Intercultural Hong Kong Series: Feeling South Asian" was premiered to showcase the cultural practices of South Asians in Hong Kong and the challenges they face. The closing performance by Talents Displaced, a group of asylum-seekers, refugees, and their allies, epitomized the diversity and inclusivity of Hong Kong Society through rap music and dance.
同時進行的活動包括關於香港邊緣群體社會韌性的展覽，群體涵蓋外籍家庭傭工、南亞人和釋囚。通過灣仔考察活動，參與者見到本地社區如何通過市區重建活化其街道。此外，會議首映了紀錄片「跨文化香港系列：南亞心·情」，介紹香港南亞人的文化習俗以及他們面臨的挑戰。「才飄八斗」為閉幕式做了說唱和舞蹈表演，他們由避難者、難民及夥伴組成，代表了香港社會的多元化及包容性。
